David Ludlow

We have all been very saddened to learn of the recent death of our long-standing friend, member and Club Secretary, David Ludlow.
The first verifiable memory of David 's long involvement with Moseley Cricket Club recalls the day when he introduced himself to our then 3rd team captain and asked if he could be of any help by volunteering to umpire his game, as he(David) was taking an umpire's training course and was in need of some practical experience.
David would have been oblivious to the ensuing dressing room jig of delight observed by a bemused team of young cricketers unused to their captain being in such euphoric mood before a game - for the offer had removed the onerous task of finding volunteers for umpiring duty. Thus began David's long association with Moseley Cricket Club spanning over 30 years as an umpire and also as a key, and much valued member in the administration of the club.
Having an umpire in our midst inevitably guaranteed lively debate in the bar at times, but David's affability and sense of humour soon ensured that he became a popular member of the club - and successive captains were the beneficiaries of his unselfish reliability and availability whenever required to officiate on behalf of the club.
In recent years David "stood" for the club 2nd XI in the Warwickshire County Cricket League. Warwickshire Cricket Board and others will also have benefitted from his support as an umpire over many years. David championed the need for the club to continue playing Sunday cricket in which he officiated until as recently as last season at the end of which he announced that he would be retiring.
On and off the field, David's contribution to cricket in the county and to Moseley Cricket Club in particular has been immense - most importantly, we will all greatly miss him as a friend.
His funeral will take place at 3.00 p.m. on Thursday 8th December at Robin Hood Crematorium, Streetsbrook Road, Shirley, Solihull.
